Standardise Australian phone numbers
Australian phone numbers break in ways generic phone-formatting tools don't expect: mobiles missing their leading zero, +61 and 0-prefixed numbers mixed in the same column, and 1300/1800 numbers formatted as if they were mobiles. DataMadeClean standardises and checks each number against valid Australian formats.

Common issues in Australian phone data
A generic phone formatter built around a different country's dialling plan won't recognise most of these.
- Excel dropping the leading zero from a mobile number stored as a number instead of text — "412 345 678" instead of "0412 345 678"
- +61 and 0-prefixed numbers mixed in the same column — "+61 412 345 678" next to "0412345678"
- Inconsistent spacing and separators — "0412-345-678", "0412 345 678", "(04)12345678"
- 1300 and 1800 numbers formatted as if they were mobiles

The leading zero is restored on the mobile number, the international prefix is normalised to national format, spacing and separators are made consistent, and the 1300 number is recognised as non-geographic rather than reformatted like a mobile.

How DataMadeClean handles it
Upload, detect, standardise
Upload your file
CSV or XLSX with a phone column — column names are auto-detected.
Format detection
Each number is checked against valid Australian mobile, landline and non-geographic formats.
Standardisation
Leading zeros are restored, international prefixes normalised, and spacing made consistent.
Review & download

Limitations
What standardisation won't catch
- DataMadeClean checks that a number matches a valid Australian format — it doesn't verify the number is actually connected or reachable.
- If Excel has already converted a long digit string to scientific notation before you upload the file, the original digits are gone and can't be reconstructed.

Clean a file free →Questions about Australian phone numbers
Will it restore a missing leading zero?
Yes. 412987654 comes back as 0412 987 654. This is the most common damage done to an Australian phone column, and it usually happens when a spreadsheet reads a column of digits as numbers and drops the zero on the way in.
What does it do with +61 numbers?
A column that mixes +61 412 987 654 with 0412 987 654 is brought to one form — by default the one the file mostly uses, so a mostly-national column comes back national rather than being converted to international.
Are 1300, 1800 and 13 numbers handled?
Yes, and they keep their own spacing rather than being grouped like a mobile. 1300 655 506, 1800 555 111 and 13 11 14 all come back as they are written here.
Does it tell mobiles and landlines apart?
Yes — they are formatted according to what they are. 0412 987 654 keeps the mobile grouping and a Sydney landline comes back as (02) 9876 5432, with the area code in brackets, rather than both being pushed into one shape.
What happens to a number that is not valid?
It is left as it is and flagged for review. A number too short to be a real Australian one, like 04129876, is reported rather than padded, reformatted or removed.
How long is my file kept?
Anonymous uploads and their results are deleted an hour after cleaning. Signed in, results follow your account's retention period, seven days by default, and you can shorten it or delete a result yourself at any time. Read the privacy policy.
