Standardize mixed date formats in a spreadsheet

Standardise date formats in CSV and Excel columns, review the recorded changes and check how ambiguous day/month values were interpreted. Choose the region and output format that suit your source data.

Why one date column ends up with three formats

Every tool that touches a spreadsheet tends to write dates its own way.

  • Slash-separated dates in the same column but in different orders — "03/04/2026" and "04/03/2026"
  • ISO-format dates mixed in with slash-separated ones — "2026-04-03" next to "03/04/2026"
  • Written-out dates from a form export — "April 3, 2026"
  • Two-digit years that could be either century — "31/12/25"

Before / after

The same date, three ways

After

Three different formats, the same day — standardized to one consistent format across the column, whether the difference is the separator, a written-out month or ISO order.

The hard part

When day and month could both be right

"03/04/2026" is the 3rd of April in Australia and the UK, and the 4th of March in the US — a spreadsheet has no way to know which one you meant on its own.

03/04/2026 could be 3 April or 4 March

Date handling uses the selected format, evidence in the column and the selected region. When no clear format is found, the engine can fall back to the regional convention. Check day/month interpretation before using results from mixed-source files; a plausible date is not proof of the intended date.

How DataMadeClean handles it

Upload, infer, standardize

01

Upload your file

CSV or XLSX with a date column — column names are auto-detected.

02

Format detection

Recognised date values are checked for supported formats. Unsupported or invalid values can remain unchanged for review.

03

Standardization

Parseable dates are formatted using the selected or inferred convention. Regional fallback can apply when no clear format is found; check ambiguous dates against the source.

04

Review & download

Questions about date cleaning

Can it work out the date format on its own?

Date handling uses the selected format, evidence in the column and the selected region. When no clear format is found, the engine can fall back to the regional convention. Check day/month interpretation before using results from mixed-source files; a plausible date is not proof of the intended date.

What format will the dates come out in?

The column's own. A column already written as 2026-04-03 stays in that form; a day-first column stays day-first; a column proved month-first by a value like 04/13/2026 stays month-first. The point is to make one column internally consistent, not to impose a house convention on your file.

What if one column mixes several formats?

Supported values are standardised to the selected, inferred or regional fallback format. Unsupported values may remain unchanged. If source rows use conflicting day/month conventions, confirm their meaning before relying on the output.

What happens to two-digit years?

They are flagged for review rather than resolved. 31/12/25 could be 1925 or 2025, so the value is left exactly as it is and raised for a person to decide. Where the rest of the column settles it - every other date running 2023 to 2025, say - the review names the likely reading for you to accept in one click; where nothing in the file settles it, no reading is offered at all. Spreadsheets guess this with a cutoff rule, which is how a signup date ends up a century in the past.

Will it change dates that are already stored as dates in Excel?

No. A real date cell stays a real date cell, with its value untouched. Only text that looks like a date gets rewritten, which is the case that actually causes trouble.

How long is my file kept?

Anonymous uploads and their results are deleted an hour after cleaning. Signed in, results follow your account's retention period, seven days by default, and you can shorten it or delete a result yourself at any time. Read the privacy policy.
